Make Fluffy Tallow and Lard Lotion

Making fluffy tallow/Lard lotion

Making your own lotion is so fun and so easy! I would have never thought to even try it! Tell me 10 years ago about the benefits of rubbing cow or pig fat on you, probably wouldn’t have caught my interest.

I never really liked lotion. I wasn’t the girl that had lotion in her purse! So much lotion is so smelly…. I wonder why??…. But if it’s something you don’t love, it’s just something you don’t love. I didn’t take the time to find something I loved, so I would just use coconut oil if I felt like I had dry skin. Now that I have made it with some really great ingredients.. I love it!! And use it a lot more then I thought!

The hardest thing in making this lotion is the ingredients, your tallow and lard. If you have a beef cow or raised your own pigs, that’s awsome! Just don’t forget to save that fat to render down. But if you dont, you can find a butcher near you, call and ask about getting cow fat or pig fat. Then you will need to render it down.

Making your lotion this way is so simple it has been fun to play around with it, its easy to make small batches to figure out what you like best! Add your own scents that you like!

This is pretty easy to make. Keep tallow as your main ingredient and add what you would like such as shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil…

I like to keep the ratios around:
75% tallow
25% or less of other oils.

Mainly I use just lard for the “other oils” but will mix it up and add an oil in with the lard so the ratio would be more like
75% tallow
15% lard
10% coconut oil/ Shea butter

I keep olive oil and castor oil and a very low percentage around just 5%.

If your confused about ratios think about it in cups.
75% = 1 cup tallow
25% = 1/4 cup other oils

Once you have figured out your oils your going to melt them down slowly on low heat in a pot or a double boiler so they will all mix together nicely. Do not overheat. After they melted pour in a bowl and put it in the fridge until it sets enough you get an indentation of your finger when pressed into it. Now you can add your scents if you want it to smell to your desire then whip it! Use either a mixer or hand mixer and whip it like you were making whipped cream. It will become so soft and fluffy. You will feel its whipped enough, when it wont form stiff peaks like a whipped cream will but stay soft. After, you will put it into smaller containers or little glass jars and let it sit for a day or two. It will then turn into a beautiful fluffy lotion!

I love that I can make a healthy lotion for me and my family. You can use it from your head to your toes, though I wouldn’t eat it because it wouldn’t taste very good… But if you can rub it on your body it should be made of things your able to eat. I just wouldn’t enjoy a mouth full of tallow, lard and coconut oil!!

Have you made your own lotion!?

What do you like to put in it?
